Issue 15|Summer / Fall 2004

Issue 15:
Inroads 15 has a European focus. Key articles examine the fiscal Crisis of the European Welfare State. The main theme is the limits of Multiculturalism, with France as case study. Many second- and third-generation Muslim immigrants live in ghetto-like neighbourhoods, poorly educated, unemployed, and reliant on social assistance, a state of affairs that has been exploited by right-wing populist politicians. Related to this is a law banning the veil worn by many Muslim girls in French schools. Riva Kastoryano, a researcher on European immigration launches the discussion, What constraints on minority culture can the majority legitimately impose?
